Shine A Light - 80th Anniversary Virtual Event

During 2020 it became apparent that, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Association would be unable to mark the 80th anniversary of the loss of Hood and her crew with a face-to-face event.

The Shine A Light initiative came about by the combination of two ideas suggested by Committee members: a) the lighting of a candle, and b) adopting a crewman. Our members, friends, supporters and linked organizations were asked to join us virtually on 24th May 2021 and to 'Shine A Light' - to light a candle and choose a crewman/men to remember - this might be a man to whom they were related or with whom they had some other connection. To support the tribute the Roll of Honour page for each crewman was amended to make it possible to print a memorial poster of each man lost. The printed memorial page could be displayed alongside the lit candle on the day. This virtual event would enable anyone to participate and could extend across the UK and overseas. A small team swung into action to publicise the event.

On the day, from across the world, hundreds of people participated: from Nova Scotia to Christchurch, New Zealand; from Sweden to Venezuela; from those who lost a family member to those who 'adopted' a sailor = maybe due to a similarity of name, profession or home town; from Association members to affiliated and naval groups and those who learned of our anniversary through the media. Tributes were to be found on lampposts, benches, in front windows and on docksides. They rolled in via Facebook, Twitter and emails. Even a piece of music was composed in commemoration.

The Association was delighted by the overwhelming response and these pages document many the tributes made - we thank everyone who joined with us in honouring the crew of H.M.S. Hood.

Although only aged 5 at the time of the sinking my Mum always remembered hearing the news about her cousin. Albert's father, Walter Brandon, was the brother of my maternal Grandmother and also served in the Navy. Born and bred in Watford, Walter moved to Edinburgh and settled there and had his family. Albert was named after Walter's brother who served in the army in World War 1 and also tragically died fighting for his county in France in 1918 - a cruel twist of fate that two Arthur Brandons in the same family were lost to war. I can't imagine what that was like for my family back then. Last year I visited the Naval Memorial in Southsea, Portsmouth where Albert's name is commemorated. We will remember them, especially on days like today. Thank you to everyone sharing their memories & loved ones and to the Hood Association for their efforts to commemorate this important anniversary.

Comments: Remembering my relative John Henry Cadmus Dilly. Tomorrow I will be visiting Boldre church which is local to me and laying a cross and a poem I wrote in tribute for him and all the others who died.

H.M.S. Hood was a battle cruiser, of around 47,000 tons in weight
And in May 1941, was taking part in the Battle of the Denmark Strait

Hoping to intercept the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, before they reached the Atlantic sea
Sadly for H.M.S. Hood, it wasn't meant to be

For in the early hours of 24th May, the Hood and German ships engaged in a fight
But despite their best efforts, the Hood found themselves in plight

For a German shell found its target, the Hood exploded and to the bottom of the sea it went down
Sinking within minutes, of 1418 crew 1415 perished and drowned

With only 3 survivors the loss of life was great and the Navy were out for revenge
After three days hunting for the Bismarck, it was finally destroyed and the Hood was avenged

Now on the 80th anniversary, we think of all those who died
Their sacrifice won't be forgotten, we remember them all with pride

I chose a Sick Berth Attendant because my Papa was also a sick berth Attendant on the Hood and was removed from duty just before this voyage because he was declared medically unfit due to a dental abscess. I'm glad it saved his life, but it left him with a great sadness at the loss of this great ship and its crew, for the rest of his  life. But his  memories and obvious pride at serving on board the Hood, sparked a keen interest on learning more for me about the Hood and her history.

The HMS Hood Association remembers the sinking at 6am on this day in the freezing waters of the Denmark Strait - and I am choosing to remember Harry Pickering, for no other reason than our surnames are similar...

HARRY PICKERING (P/KX 82270) was 26 years old and engaged to be married. His father was awarded the DCM which Harry took to sea for safekeeping; the medal was lost with the ship.

Thank you, Sir, for your service, and the 1414 other souls that perished on this day.

We will remember them!

#HMSHood, #Shinealight

reason for choice:

Grandfather

Comments:

My grandfather Ronald G. Robertson a gunnery officer, was extremely fortunate to be taken off Hood, 2 days before it was sunk, due to a perforated duodenal ulcer. He wrote for the ships monthly magazine for years and delighted all with his happy memories of life aboard Hood. The death of his comrades had a profound effect on his life and this was recorded in many articles he wrote over the years. On his retirement his partners presented him with the oil painting pictured. Sadly he lost his own battle with cancer in 1996. We would love to know who his comrades in the pictures are. Remembering my Papa and his lost comrades today.

Picture of his quarters. Note the 1940s pin up, before he met my granny!

Comments: As the sun sets on this the 80th anniversary of the loss of HMS Hood, we remember the 2 lives lost by each of the 1415 officers and men - the one they were living on 24th May 1941 - and the life they would have had had they not died. When they died, many gave up their chances to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered wise men. They gave up everything for our country, for others, for us. And all we can do is remember.
