Biographical Information:

"George" as he was known, was born on 24 June 1916 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, the only child of Edward and Harriet Gulliver. He first attended the George Street School. He then attended the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook from April 1928 to March 1932. He entered the Navy and was trained at H.M.S. St. Vincent.

He is known to have served aboard H.M.S. Campbell. It was during this posting that he helped rescue a drowning girl. He was promoted early for his heroic act. He is believed to have been posted to Hood during the 1930s and was a member of the ship's concert part band.

He married Margaret Hay in 1939. They lived at St Mary's Road, Portsmouth (she later lived in Granton, Edinburgh, Scotland). He was 24 years old at the time of his loss.
