-H.M.S. Hood Crew Information-
H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Thomas Alford joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 14 June 1910, at the age of 16 years 3 months, joining the Signals branch at the outset. Rated an Ordinary Signalman on his 18th birthday in 1912, he signed on for 12 years’ “Man’s Time” until the age of 30. He was drafted to the pre-Dreadnought battleship HMS Exmouth in 1913, and remained with her until 1916, during which time her activities included the bombardment of Zeebrugge in 1914 and participation in the Dardanelles campaign in 1915. He was drafted to HMS Hood as a Leading Signalman in 1923, and his service onboard was first highlighted by his name’s appearance in the “Scott O’Connor” personnel list of those who participated in the “Empire Cruise” of 1923-4. Released to pension as a Leading Signalman on his 40th birthday in 1934, he nonetheless “signed on” again, shore-based, for the duration of World War II, finally being discharged on 15 June 1945. He passed away in his native Worcestershire just five years later, at the age of 56.
