Biographical Information:

Derrick was born on 2nd February 1921 in St Vincent, Cape Verde Isles to Herbert and Emily Hawkey. The family later lived in Parkstone, Dorsetshire.

Derrick joined the navy at the age of 15 in 1936. He subsequently served at/in H.M.S. St. Vincent (Jan-May 1937), H.M.S. Iron Duke (Mar-May 1938), H.M.S. Nelson (May 1938-July 1939) and H.M.S. Hood (July 1939). He was most likely awarded his DSM during Operation Primrose in early 1940.

He was 20 years old at the time of his loss.
