Biographical Information:

John was born on 11 January 1902 in Farnborough, Hampshire to John and Phoebe Hawthorne. Sadly, his mother died of cancer when he was only a few weeks old. John married Kate Cooper and together they had 7 children- Winifred, Alfred, Ethel, Violet, George, Margaret and John. His sons Alfred and John also went on to serve in the Navy.

John joined the Navy in August 1919 and was assigned to H.M.S. Victory (which he would later be assigned to another 14 times). During his career he also served in many ships lastly H.M.S. Hood which he joined on 2nd June 1939. John's sons Alfred (Alfie) and John also went on to serve in the Navy.

John was 39 years old at the time of his loss.
