Biographical Information:

Leonard was born on 18thMarch 1916 in Goldenhill, Staffordshire to Reginald and Ada Bates. The family later lived on First Avenue in South Kirkby, Yorkshire. He worked as a haulage hand at Frickley Colliery prior to joining the Marines around 1935. Leonard was 25 years old at the time of his loss.
