Biographical Information:

John was born on 8th June 1921 in Farnborough, Hampshire. He was the second of four sons born to Dr John Sutherland and Dorothy Mary Lidgey Levack. The family later lived in Norwich. He was educated at Norwich School and Edinburgh Academy where he was Head of Jeffrey House and Head Ephor. He played rugby for Edinburgh Academy and played for Scotland Under 19 in a rugby match against England in 1938.

He completed his Royal Marine training at Deal winning the King's Medal for top recruit in his intake in 1939. H.M.S. Hood was his first posting. He was 19 years old at the time of his loss.
