Biographical Information:

Fred was born on 24th December 1916 to James and Elizabeth Mitchell, of 40 Deveron Street, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Fred was educated at the Gordon Schools. At age 14 he relocated to Jersey, Channel Islands for work purposes.

He joined the Navy at age 17 and was subsquently posted to H.M.S. Victory and H.M.S. Iron Duke. He was stationed for 2.5 years in the West Indies aboard H.M.S. Challenger. He was then assigned to H.M.S. Cochrane for 18 months, and lastly to Hood at the outbreak of the war.

Fred was engaged to Martha Walker (known as Dolly). Fred had received his Leading Torpedo Operator's certificate very shortly before the sinking of Hood. He was 24 years old at the time of his loss.
