H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: John Manogue joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd class on 12 February 1915, at the age of 17. He was present at the battle of Jutland as an able seaman in the battlecruiser HMS Lion. Joining Hood in 1923, he participated in the round-the-world 'Empire Cruise' of 1923-4, his name being misspelled 'Monogue' in the Scott O'Connor list of participants in that voyage. Leaving the RN in 1927 on his 30th birthday, at the end of his 12-year engagement, he took up residence in Halifax with his wife Elizabeth (nee Forcer) and their three children. He worked for the Post Office until his retirement, and died on 30 September 1971, at the age of 74.
