H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Stanley Edward Murgatroyd

Biographical Information:

Stanley was born in 1909. He joined the Navy in 1926, first serving in H.M.S. Impregnable as a Boy 2nd Class. He transferred to Hood later in the year as a Boy 1st Class. During his time in Hood, he was a member of the success seaman's cutter team. He shortly reached the rank of Ordinary Seaman and was transferred to his next assignment.

Stanley would later serve in the Second World War. He ultiumately reached the rank of Petty Officer while serving aboard the submarine H.M.S. Thames. He sadly died in the sinking of the submarine on 03 August 1940.
