Biographical Information:

Arthur was born on 9th June 1901 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. He was He joined the Royal Navy on 9th January 1917, at the age of fifteen, as a Boy Second Class, and in June that year began his specialisation in the Signals branch. He served in the battleship H.M.S. Thunderer late in World War I, and hence was awarded both the Victory and British War medals.

On his eighteenth birthday, 9 June 1919, Arthur signed on in the Royal Navy for an initial period of 12 years 'man's time' - later extended to 22 - and served in a variety of locations, notably the battleships Warspite and Barham.

Arthur was drafted to H.M.S. Hood on 2nd June 1939, in the rate of Leading Signalman, and was advanced onboard to Acting Yeoman of Signals on 1 September that year. He was confirmed in that rate on 1 September 1940 whilst still in Hood.
