H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Richard Benjamin Onslow

Biographical Information: Richard was born in London on 25th May 1903.

He joined Royal Navy on 29th May 1921 and trained at the shore based H.M.S.Vivid until 4th September 1921. His first ship was H.M.S. Revenge in which he served from 5th September 1921 until 18th May 1923. After a return spell at Vivid he joined H.M.S. Hood on 24th November 1923 and served in her until 6th January 1926 - a period which included the famous Empire Cruise.

After a final spell at Vivid up to 28th march 1926 he left the service 5 years and remained on reserve into the 1930sHe rejoined early in WWIIand served in H.M.S. HMS Caradoc during 1940 which was part of the escort for H.M.S. Revenge and H.M.S. Resolution when they carried gold bullion over to Canada in 1939.

He died April 1985
