Biographical Information:

"Ted", as he was known, was born on 19th October 1898 in Epsom, Surrey , the only son of Herbert and Helen Savage. He was educated at Walton-on-the-Hill and later at Reigate Grammar School.

He joined the Navy in Gosport in January 1914 where he was educated in engineering. He served aboard ship in the North Sea in 1918. He later served in the Mediterranean twice- once at the repair depot in Malta and again on a ship in the fleet. He then served in Portsmouth where he served as the secretary of the Naval Benevolent Trust.

He later served in the China Station where he received the King George VI Coronation Medal. During his service he served in H.M.S.s Royal Sovereign, Iron Duke, Shopshire and Danae in addition to various shore establishments.

Ted ended his naval service in 1939 and was placed in the reserves. During his short civilian life he had served as the Resident Engineer at the Royal Veterinary College, London. He was recalled to military service at the start of the Second World War. He served in a repair depot until December 1940, when he joined the crew of Hood.

He married Doris V.L. Read in 1923 in Reigate, Surrey. He was 42 years old at the time of his loss.
