Biographical Information:

Harold was born in Poole, Dorset on 24th August, 1914 the son of George and Ann Smith. He was the husband of May Smith, of Bedhampton, Hampshire, the couple having married on 21st November 1939. Before becoming an acting Sub-Lieutenant on 1st July 1938, Harold had served as an Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class. He joined Hood on 10th August 1939 having completed an 11 month engineering course at Greenwich. He was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant(E) on 10th August 1940 and Lieutenant (E) on 1st January 1941. He was 26 years old at the time of his loss.
