H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information:

Gilbert was born in Bristol on 21st August 1904. He joined the RN on 17th September 1920.

He served in other ships before joining H.M.S. Hood as a Boy 1st Class on 16th August 1921. His service in Hood lasted until 14th May 1923 by which time he had been advanced, first to Ordinary Seaman and then to Able Seaman. On leaving Hood, Gilbert went to H.M.S. Vivid. Finally he served in H.M.S. Cairo in Mombasa, Kenya until 7th July 1925.

He died on 27th November 1973 at Poole, England.
