Rank:
Joined Hood: July 1939
Left Hood: 19th May 1941
Biographical Information:
Bill joined Hood in July 1940 and was one of the last to leave the ship before she was lost. Bill left her on 19th May 1941 with 12 other ratings who were candidates for commissions to appear before as election board at Portsmouth. It is believed that Jon Pertwee, later famous as the third Dr. Who left at the same time.
Bill was in the same mess as Hood sinking survivor Bob Tilburn. A couple of weeks after Hood was sunk Bob went to stay with Bill in Blackpool.
Bill went on to become a Lieutenant Commander and had command of an RML until the end of the war. He was mentioned in despatches for his part in the Dieppe raid when he and his crew sank a German tanker. He came out of the Navy/R.N.V.R. at the end of the war in May 1946.
Bill was one of the early members of the H.M.S. Hood Association.
