H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Edwin Tamblin was born in Duloe, Cornwall in 1887, and joined the Royal Navy in September 1907 at the age of 20, having previously worked as a baker. He served throughout World War I and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. He joined HMS Hood as a Petty Officer in June 1922, and his time onboard included the Empire Cruise. Shortly afterwards, while still serving in Hood, he was promoted to the rate of Chief Petty Officer following a string of unbroken 'Superior' professional assessments over many years. Edwin Tamblin left the RN in September 1929, having completed 22 years' 'man's time'. He died at the age of 82 in 1969 in Liskeard, East Cornwall, not far from his birthplace.
