H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: John Baldwin was born in Gressenhall Workhouse, Norfolk on 12th April 1902 and was sent to TS Exmouth in early July 1915. He joined HMS Impregnable on 27 March 1918, his last ship being HMS Hollyhock, which he left on 25th May 1928, rated as Able Seaman. He was invalided out on 3rd October 1928 with astigmatism in both eyes, and it is possible that he joined the Merchant Navy as a steward after that. He married in February 1929 and died on 12th January 1973. His latter working years were spent as a messenger with the Daily Mirror.
