H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Albert Thomas Edward Powell

Biographical Information: Albert was born in 1909, and enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1925. He joined HMS Hood as a Boy First Class in 1926, and was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on his eighteenth birthday while serving onboard.

During World War II he served in destroyers HMS Zulu (1938-41) and HMS Onslow. He won the DSM (distinguished Service Medal) for his conduct during Arctic Convoy PQ18. Albert was pensioned in 1949 as a Chief Petty Officer.

After retiring from the Navy he joined the Coastguard, in which he held the rank of Station Officer. He was awarded the BEM in 1973, shortly before his retirement.

Sadly, Albert Powell's retirement lasted only three years: he passed away in 1976.
