H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: A E Bullen joined the Navy in October 1926 as a boy entrant. Trained at Ganges until April 1928, passing out as a signalman, having signed on for 12 years. Drafted to HMS Emperor of India in April 1928 and then the Hood in Aug 1928.In May 29 drafted to Vivid, then Pegasus (July 1929),HMS Delhi (November 1929 - May 1932),and others until start of WW2, when he was on HMS Aurora Nov 37 to Nov 41. Became Leading Signalman in November 1939. Loaned to HMS Cossack in Feb 1940 to rescue 300 POW's from the Altmark at Josing Fiord, Norway. Drafted to St Angelo, Malta from Nov 1941 to Feb 1944. Then drafted to HMS Argonaut in Apr 44 for Operation Overlord in June and Operation Dragoon on 15th August 1944. Drafted to Golden Hind in Sydney, Australia from Jan 45 and then the HMS Maidstone submarine depot ship at Subic Bay supporting HM subs Solent,Sleuth,Spark,Supreme,Stygian, Sturgeon, Seascout and subs of 8th Flotilla. At end of hostilities with J apan,joined taskgroup 112.2 for re-occupation of Hong Kong and Kowloon. Repatriated POW's from East Indies camps and Celebes. 30th Sept 1945 arrived Freementle and then returned to UK. Released 8th March 1946.

In civilian life he became a Postal & Telegraph Officer at Portsmouth GPO until he died in August 1971.
