H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Joined the Marines on 08 July 1901 in Leeds, Yorkshire. Royal Marine Butcher from 21 Aug 1906 to 20 May 1913. Reengaged to the Royal Marines on 26 May 1913. Discharged to Fleet Reserve 1922, full discharge 7 Oct 1933 on attaining age of 50. Died in Belfast 10 Apr 1955. Was on the Hood for its commissioning at Rosyth through its sea trails and first voyage to Plymouth where he joined the Orion. He transferred from the Marshall Soult in April 1921 for a 2nd term on Hood and joined the Defiance in Sept 1922. Medals: African General Service Medal with Somaliland Clasp 1908-1910. St V B medal 1914-1915. Russian Medal for Zeal 1916 (awarded to crew of HMS Jupiter by the Russian Goverment for service in the White Sea. HMS Jupiter was sent to Archangel to act as an icebreaker as the proper ice breaker had broken down and the port was closing. He also received salvage money for the s.s. Thracia in March/April 1915 also while serving on HMS Jupiter.
