Biographical Information: Frederick was in the naval orphanage at Greenwich from an early age. He joined the Navy as a Boy Seaman 16th November 1932 rating 2nd class, made 1st class 22nd july 1933. Joined Hood at age 16 and served 12th October 1933 to 10th August 1936. He is recorded as serving at the following ships/establishments:
- H.M.S. Victory 11th August 1936 ---4th June 1937.
- H.M.S. Vernon 5th June 1937---21st October 1937, making able seaman.
- Transferred to submarines at H.M.S. Dolphin 22nd October 1937--2nd November 1938
- At Dolphin he was invalided out ,after sustaining an injury to his ankle. He was regarded as an talented sportsman and represented the Hood and Navy in cricket,football hockey and boxing.
