H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

George Henry Benoy

Biographical Information: Born in 1877, George Benoy was one of the oldest men to have served in Hood. He was already 25 years old when he joined the Royal Navy in 1902, so his 22 years mans time did not complete until 1924, by which time he had reached the ripe old age of 47. His participation in the Empire Cruise of 1923-4 came right at the end of his service time, therefore. As a Chief Blacksmith, he is listed in the Empire Cruise Scott OConnor records among the Artisans of the ships company.A Devonport native, he married his wife Kate Rogers there in 1901 (before entry to the Royal Navy) and appears to have returned to his home city on completion of his Royal Navy time. He died there on 14 August 1941.
