-H.M.S. Hood Crew Information-
H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Henry John Turnbull entered the Royal Navy, at the age of 19, on 8 June 1923, having previously been a labourer. Not long after his time in Hood, his first period of naval service ended when he was discharged on 7 June 1935 at the age of 31, on completion of his 12-year engagement. He subsequently completed one year's further service in the Royal Fleet Reserve, from 10 March 1936 to 9 March 1937. He rejoined the RFR just ten days before the outbreak of World War II. Sadly, he lost his life in the sinking of HMS Dunedin by submarine U-124 on 24 November 1941. His service in Hood came to light in 2019 with the discovery of a 'Stoker's Manual - 1927 Edition' with his name on it, and his address as '52 Mess, HMS Hood'.
