H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Roger Hill joined the RN from Pangbourne College in 1927, shortly before his 17th birthday. He served in a succession of seagoing appointments before joining Hood as a mid-seniority Lieutenant in 1937. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1941, he was appointed in command of three destroyers in succession during WWII - HM ships Ledbury, Grenville and Jervis. In command of Ledbury he played a major role in the famous 'Pedestal' Malta convoy, helping rescue the tanker Ohio and being awarded the DSO, second only to the VC in recognition of gallantry in the face of the enemy. In Grenville, he was awarded he DSC and in Jervis he was Mentioned in Despatches. On leaving the RN in 1946 he was promoted Acting Commander. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1965, and died there, in Arrowtown, on 5 May 2001.
