H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Joseph Hewson's service in Hood came to light when a named group photo of the winners of the Atlantic Fleet Boys' Inter-Squadron cutters race came to light. He joined the RN on 29 October 1919 and joined Hood as a Boy First Class in 1920. By the time he left Hood nearly three years later, he had been advanced twice, to Able Seaman. Joseph Hewson went on to serve in the RN until 1944. He attained the rate of Chief Petty Officer, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) in July 1941, for bravery and resourcefulness, whilst serving on convoy escort duty in the elderly destroyer HMS Vanity.
