H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Samuel Joce joined the Royal Navy at Devonport, in his home city of Plymouth, on 9 January 1908, at the age of 16 years and three months. He had previously begun his working life as a plumbers mate. A Boy Second Class on enlistment, he was advanced to Stoker on his 18th birthday, 15 September 1909. Around 1912 his naval career was not going well, so he elected to leave the Service in December that year but he rejoined just two months later. In 1915 he was drafted to the battleship HMS Thunderer, and in her he was present at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. By the time he joined Hood in 1925 he was a Leading Stoker, and during his two years onboard he was advanced to Acting Stoker Petty Officer. He was discharged to pension in November 1931, but rejoined the RN in 1940 for the duration of World War II hostilities. He died early in 1954 in his home city of Plymouth.
