H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Jack Tait joined the Royal Navy at HMS Impregnable on 19 May 1915, at the age of 15. He served a total of five years in the RN, and HMS Hood, then a brand-new ship, was his last ship - he left the RN just four days after leaving Hood. Information held suggests that he returned to his native North-East England, working first as a blacksmith associated with the coal mining industry, and latterly as a cemetery attendant. He died in Sunderland early in 1949, at the age of just 49.
