H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information:

Clifford was born on 30th April 1904 at Teignmouth. Devon, the son of Ernest John Ladd, a baker and confectioner, and his wife Lucy. Clifford had a brother, Ernest and a sister, Dorothy.

Joining the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer in August 1919, Clifford served in Hood for three years between August 1925 and August 1928 and had reached the rate of Ordnance Artificer 3rd Class by the time he left the ship.

His progression continued through the 1930s and, by the time he joined his final ship, H.M.S. Repulse on 3rd January 1939, he was rated Chief Ordnance Artificer 2nd Class.

Clifford lost his life in the sinking of Repulse on 10th December 1941.
