-H.M.S. Hood Crew Information-
H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Albert John Powell, a native of Newport on the Isle of Wight, was just fifteen years three months old when he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 24th March 1924. He attained the age of 18, reaching adulthood in the navy's estimation, while serving in the battlecruiser-converted-to-aircraft-carrier HMS Furious, in 1926. By the time he came to serve in Hood, for thirty-three months between 1936 and 1939, he was an Able Seaman.

For much of the Second World War Albert Powell served in the elderly battleship HMS Revenge, which had an active war, first in escorting Atlantic convoys and later operating against the Japanese in the Far East. While he was serving in her he was advanced, first, to Leading Seaman then, later, to Acting Petty Officer - a rate in which he was confirmed later.

Albert Powell was discharged to pension on 3 December 1949, with 23 years' pensionable service over the age of 18. Our photograph shows him as a senior rating late in his career.
