-H.M.S. Hood Crew Information-
H.M.S. Crew List

It is estimated that as many as 18,000 men served aboard the 'Mighty Hood' during the operational portion of her 21 year career. Unfortunately, there is no surviving official single listing of ALL men who served in her. Here you will find our attempt at creating such a listing. We are using the few, fragmentary crew lists known to exist, Navy Lists, various official reports, public records, and most importantly of all, inputs from the families of former crew.

Biographical Information: Lancelot Vere Webb was born in Kensington, London, in 1892 and joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1905. He was appointed to HMS Lion as a midshipman. In 1913 he was forced to transfer to the Accountant Branch when his eyesight was found to be defective. He had a succession of appointments in big ships: the cruiser HMS Warrior from 1913 to 1915; the battleship HMS Revenge from 1915 to 1917 (including Jutland); and the battleshp HMS Marlborough from 1917 to 1919. He was appointed OBE for good service in 1919.

Webb was appointed to Hood in January 1923 as Paymaster Lieutenant and obtained his promotion to Paymaster Lieutenant Commander in December, whilst Hood was on the World Cruise. He left the ship at some time before June 1925.

After Hood he went on to appointments in Eagle, Nelson and as secretary to the Captain of Singapore Naval Base from 1931 to 1933. Subsequent appointments were to Arethusa from 1934 to 1937 (including Palestine operations with accompanying campaign medal) and the Admiralty from 1937 to 1940. His final appointment, in the rank of Paymaster Commander, was to the battlecruiser HMS Repulse in December 1940. Sadly he was still on board when Repulse was sunk by Japanese air attack in December 1941, and lost his life in her sinking.

Whilst no photograph is held of Lancelot Webb, there is a drawing of him in the archive of the National Maritime Museum. It is reproduced below.
