Joseph was born on 23rd June 1916 in Middleton, Yorkshire to parents Robert and Bertha Earl. He is known to have had a brother named William.

Joseph was the husband of Alice Earl, of Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. He was 24 years old at the time of his loss.
