Bertie was born on 18th May 1917 in Newport, Isle of Wight to Albert and Lucy Eldridge. The family later lived in Ryde, Isle of Wight. He was 24 years old at the time of his loss. He is listed as "Bertie Douglas Messius Eldridge" in naval records.
