Biographical Information:

George as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Clerkenwell, London on 22nd March 1894. His parents had come to England from Italy shortly before he was born. He was the youngest of 18 children. Of these, 7 (6 boys and 1 girl) reached maturity. He worked as a lift attendant prior to joining the military.

George joined the Navy on 23rd April 1912. His naval service saw him stationed in many places, to include fleet duty in China. Among his key appointments were ships/establishments like Victory II, Renown, Hindustan (where he was promoted to Stoker 1st Class in 1913 and then Leading Stoker in 1916), Pekin (where he was promoted to Stoker Petty Officer in 1918), Carlisle, Barham, Centurion, Dartmouth, Nelson, Osprey, Coventry and Excellent .

After serving 21 years in the navy, George retired to civilian life in London. He rejoined the navy following the outbreak of the Second World War. He was subsequently trained at H.M.S. Vernon with time spent at Victory II and Victory III. He was posted to his final ship, Hood, in June 1940.

George was married three years later in 1914. He and his wife Beatrice ultimately had two sons and four daughters. At George's request, some of his children later assumed their mother's maiden name, Abley. George was 47 years old at the time of his loss.
