Biographical Information:

Joseph was born on 31st January 1923 to James and Jane (Jennie) Fitzgerald, of Collyhurst, Manchester, Lancashire. He was their fourth son (the others being Thomas, Harry, Albert and Frederick). He went to St Patricks School in Miles Platting, Collyhurst. He is known to have loved sport, especially football and swimming. He left school and joined the Navy early at age 14. He was subsequently trained at H.M.S. Caledonia and Hood was likely his only ship. His brothers Thomas and Harry joined the RAF and Albert and Frederick joined the Army.

Joseph was 18 years old at the time of his loss.
