These men died while building or serving in Hood. Some actually died aboard ship, whereas others died in hospital or while otherwise physically away, but still assigned to the ship. We will post more information on these men as well as additional casualties as we come across it. We would like to thank Mr Don Kindell for providing the vast bulk of this information. JAMES MCGREGOR
Civilian Engineer/Worker, John Brown & Company, Ltd. Shipyard
Additional Information: Died aboard Hood on Monday, 19th May 1919 as the result of an explosion which took place in a compartment beneath the carpenter's heavy store. He was 32 years old.

SIDNEY HINGSTON
Chief Stoker Petty Officer, Chief Stoker, 306670, Royal Navy
Additional Information: Sidney was born in Bigbury, Devon on 26 September 1885. He was the husband of Keturah Hingston. He died 15 June 1920 of an illness in Scandinavian waters during Hood's first foreign cruise. He was 34 years old at the time of his loss.

LEONARD TOM EDWARDS

Additional Information: Leonard was born in Ottery Saint Mary, Devon on 04 March 1900. He died following an illness on 25 March 1921. He was 21 years old at the time of his loss.

Additional Information: Frederick was born in Hammersmith, London on 21 April 1899. Died by his own hand on 12 June 1921. He was 22 years old at the time of his loss.

Additional Information: Alfred was born in Hungerford, Berkshire on 03 September 1904. He was lost at sea - missing, presumed drowned - on 22 August 1922 off St Vincent, Cape Verde Islands. He was 17 years old at the time of his loss.

THOMAS MARTIN BROAD

Additional Information: Served under the alias of "Thomas Coombes." Thomas was born in Tavistock, Devon on 18 January 1887. He died on 31 January 1923 following an illness. He was 36 years old at the time of his loss.

EDGAR NICHOLS
Marine, Ply/ 21303, Royal Marines
Additional Information: Edgar Nichols was born in 1899. He joined the Royal Marine Artillery in 1917. The following year he was assigned to the Royal Marine Field Force detachment to North Russia on board H.M.S. Glory (aka Glory III). He was assigned in late 1919 to H.M.S. Hood which was preparing to enter service. He remained with Hood until his death on 18 August 1923 following an illness He was 24 years old at the time of his loss.

Additional Information: Walter was born in Portland, Dorset on 02 March 1897. He died, following an illness, on 05 February 1924 while at Port Swettenham during "World Cruise." He was 26 years old at the time of his loss.

ALFRED DOUGLAS PUNSHON
Chief Signal Boatswain, Royal Navy
Additional Information: Alfred was born on 14 October 1877 in Brighton, Sussex. His orginal service number was 177629. He later become a Boatswain (warrant officer). He died in a Melbourne, Australia hospital on 25 March 1924 from a heart attack suffered during the "World Cruise." He was 46 years old at the time of his loss. He is buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery, in the Independent Section ‘B’, grave 521.

Additional Information: Mr Langford was a dockyard worker at the Naval Base in Portsmouth, Hants, UK. He died on/about 15 February 1930 due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning following work inside one of Hood's watertight compartments. We have no additional information.

Additional Information: James was the son or Mr and Mrs R. Brown of Childe Square, Stamshaw, Portsmouth, Hampshire. Hood was his only ship. He was injured after falling overboard early one morning, near Arosa Bay, Spain on 19 January 1935. He was 16 years old at the time of his loss. He was buried in the British military cemetery at Villagarcia, Spain.

STANLEY GEORGE NICHOLSON

Additional Information: Stanley was born on 20 October 1907 to parents Charles and Gertrude Nicholson of Gosport, Hampshire. He was the husband of Blanche Nicholson. His brother, Arthur Nicholson was later lost in the sinking of Hood. Stanley died on or about 10 May 1936 following an illness. He was buried in Las Palmas Canary Islands. Additional Information: Douglas was the son of Frederick John Smith of Guist, Norfolk. Douglas died along with WJ Hayward on 06 March 1937 from injuries sustained while mooring in Gibraltar. He was 18 years old at the time of his loss.
