Background
Navy Lists are books published by the Admiralty usually on a monthly bais, though less frequently during the war years. Each volume lists all serving and retired Royal Navy officers and provides details of the ship in which they currently serve. There is also a listing by ship showing all officers assigned to her at that date.
A full set of Navy Lists is held at and, from this, we now have images of all the Navy Lists from 1920 to 1941 as they relate to Hood. Over a period of time we will add these to the database so that, ultimately, you will be able to search here for any officer who served in Hood. New data is added regularly as it is transcribed from the images.
You can search the database in three different ways:
-
Use the A to Z buttons to the right to view a list of all officers with surnames beginning with any letter.
-
Alternatively, use the links below to view a full listing of Hood's Office compliment for any month that is held on the database.
Finally, the links at the bottom of the page can be used to search for officers of a particular rank. Remember though that some officers may have served in Hood under more than one rank.
Whichever search method you choose you will get a page that lists the men recorded in the database as matching your search criteria. Remember that the database is not yet complete. This list will contain links to each man. If you click these links you will get another page listing all the entries on the database for that individual.
How You Can Help
Help in transcribing the images into a format that can be added to the database is always welcome. The images of the Navy Lists are transcribed into Microsoft Excel from where I can manipulate them into a form that can be added to the database. So if you have MS Excel and have a little time please are You would need to be familiar with the basic of using Excel: copying data from a range of cells to another range of cells, adding worksheets etc. If in doubt please drop me a line.
