Hood Memorabilia

Top Left- A Shelley china cup and saucer. York pattern which dates from 1932-1940's.
Top Right - A cigarette box which was possibly made by a Hood crew member.
Bottom- A book mark bearing the ship's badge. Book mark.

H.M.S. Hood Hairbrush
This photo was provided by Frances Hartley. It was given to her by her father. It appears to be a 1920s-1930s era hairbrush and may have been sold aboard Hood, perhaps in her NAAFI canteen.

H.M.S. Hood Cigarette Case
This photo was provided by Reg Monk. His father, George Monk, served as a civilian aboard H.M.S. King George V's NAAFI canteen. He never served in Hood, but was aboard KGV during the operations to stop the Bismarck. At some point during the war he picked up two nickel plated brass cigarette cases- one for KGV and the one for Hood shown here.

H.M.S. Hood Sailor Doll
This photo was provided by Christine Keith who sent it on behalf of a friend. It shows a doll dressed in a rated Hood sailor's uniform. This was purchased for her friend aboard Hood in the summer of 1935. He was taken to visit the ship by his grandparents during Navy Week at Portsmouth.

H.M.S. Hood in Space
From 21 May to 14 June 2008, a Hood blazer badge like the one to the left was in space. It was aboard NASA's space shuttle Discovery during mission STS-124.

Hornby Trophy
From 17 to 29 October 1921, H.M.S. Hood was at Scapa Flow with teams participating in the Combined Fleet Regatta. Hood had a particularly strong showing that year, winning several cups. Among these was the Hornby Cup won on 25 October. The example show to the left was presented to Lt Cecil Allen for his successful competition for the cup. H.M.S. Hood Ceramic Owl
This photo was provided by Clem Harrison. It shows a small ceramic Owl bearing the badge of H.M.S. Hood. It was manufactured by WHS&S Grt china, Kings Way, London. It also has the number 024 stamped on it. We have no other information. If anyone can tell us more about this piece, please contact us.

H.M.S. Hood Silver Spoons
This image is a combination of two photos. Both show silver spoons that may have been purchase in Hood's bookstall. The photo of the slim spoon on the left was sent-in by Mike Stumbler, the photo of the larger caddy spoon to the right was sent in by Phil Waller and the photo of the slim spoon on the right was sent in by Tina McDade.

H.M.S. Hood Mechanical Pencil
This photo was sent in by Christine Jowers. It shows a mechanical pencil that was sold in Hood's bookstall.

H.M.S. Hood Copper Items
This photo was sent in by John Levesley. It shows what appears to be a copper ash tray and what may be two coasters. These could also be used as small containers for items such as buttons, etc. These are likely commemorative items bought aboard the ship or at a Navy Days concession. Some were used aboard the ship by crew and others were sent home or used as gifts.

H.M.S. Hood Cutlery Set
This photo was also sent in by John Levesley. It shows a Hood cutlery set dating from the 1920s or 1930s. The set is electroplated nickel steel (EPNS) and was made by SM Co. These were very likely commemorative items bought aboard the ship and sent home to loved ones.

H.M.S. Hood Football Medal
This medal is from the collection of Matt Blair. It is a football medal awarded to Royal Marine Band Musician Sullivan sometime during 1936. The front depicts lads playing football and the back shows the ship's badge. It is in very good condition. Click on the photo to the left to view an enlarged version.

H.M.S. Hood Cruet Set
This cruet set is owned by Hood veteran Alec Kellaway. He purchased it aboard the ship in September 1936 for six shillings. The set consists of a mustard container as well as salt and pepper shakers. The set is EPNS glass lined. The salt and pepper shakers are approximately 5cm tall. Despite its age, the set is still in very good condition.

H.M.S. Hood Memorial Coin
This coin was struck by Pobjoy Mint on behalf of the Government of Gibraltar in 1993. At the request of Bob Tilburn and Ted Briggs (pictured below), a significant portion of the profits from a special edition version were donated to the King George Fund for Sailors.

Australian Special Service Squadron Empire Cruise Medal
This was a special medal struck by Australia in honour of the Special Service Squadron's epic 1923/1924 circumnavigation of the globe.

This pristine example is from the collection of Matt Blair.

Hood Necklace
This beautiful necklace was purchased aboard Hood by crewman Henry Wannerton. He obtained it as a gift for his wife Ivy. Sadly, Harry was later lost in the sinking of Hood on 24 May 1941.

This necklace is in the collection of his son, Henry Wannerton.

Hood Badge
This is a fairly common badge dating from the 1920s or 1930s. This particular example is in pristine condition. It is from the collection of Dr Ian Beattie.

Hood Pins
The ornate pin on the far left is believed to be from the 1920s or 1930s. The blue enamal pin is from after the loss of the ship. It was issued to help raise funds (in memory of Hood) for sailors/marines via the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Royal Naval Division and War Comforts Fund. Through this, the memories of the ship and crew continued to contribute to the war effort even after their deaths. Both are from the collection of Dr Ian Beattie.

  

H.M.S. Hood Crystal/Glass Tray
This tray is of sand blown glass. It is believed to have been created in Denmark sometime before World War 2 (quite likely as a result of Hood's June 1920 visit). It is roughly 1 m in length and 25 cm in width. This is in the collection of Paul Wilde who provided the photos seen here.

Rodman Cup Medal
This is a medal commemorating Hood's cutter team's victory for the 1920 Rodman Cup. This particular event turned out to be the first of many sporting events and trophies won by her crew. The cutter team and their boat, "Dipping Lug" were recently additions to Hood at the time. In fact, the lot had been transferred from H.M.S. Lion...the previous year's Rodman Cup winner.

It is likely that the Rodman Cup itself was presented to the ship, whereas participating crew received medals such as the one shown here. It bears the inscription "H.M.S. Hood, Sports Club, Rodman Cup, 1920". This item is owned by our own Paul Bevand.

Hood Fork & Compact
These beautiful items are also from the collection of Dr Ian Beattie. The compact is believed to be from the 1920s/1930s. We have no information on the fork.

Hood Toast Rack
This rack is silver plated and measures approximately 3¾" long x 2" deep x 3" high. The banner below the anchor and bird is a medium blue colour with "HMS HOOD" in its centre. The rack was made in England.

Hood Trophy Scull
This item is approximately 12" in length. The wide end bears the inscription "H.M.S. HOOD 1937 GIG RACE 1ST." This was won by Len Pay of Hood's rowing team in 1937. Sadly, Len was later lost in the sinking of Hood.
