Photos & Graphics of H.M.S. Hood

The following photographs were sent in to the site by Peter Mackie of Melbourne, Australia. The photographs are of Hood's visit to Melbourne in March 1924 during the Cruise of the Special Service Squadron (Empire Cruise). All of the photos were taken by John Scott - Peter's Grandfather - and have not been published before. John was a keen amateur photographer and used a Speed Graphic Quarter plate camera which was a first class piece of equipment in the early 1920s as can be seen by the excellent quality of the images.

Above- Hood (left) and one of her accompanying cruisers (right). H.M.S. Repulse is in the background.

Above & Below- Here we see Hood berthed and open to visitors. "B" turret has been angled around to face the port. These photos were likely taken the same day. Note the people standing on top of "A" turret and the revolving hood of the 30ft rangefinder atop the conning tower.

Above- A shot of Hood's "cousin" and running mate H.M.S. Repulse.

Above- Here we have a shot of senior-ranking officers leaving the ship. At the extreme left hand side of the shot you can just see an arm with the rank insignia of a Vice-Admiral. This would be Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field who was in over all command of the "Special Service Squadron." The first officer fully visible at the left hand side is a Lieutenant Commander and he is followed by Captain John Knowles Im Thurn of Hood.

Above- Some officers in this shot are hard to identify. Left to right- Unknown, Rear-Admiral Sir Hubert Brand (Commanding First Light Cruiser Squadron) and Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field. We are unable to identify the remaining individuals.

Above- Hood departs for her next port of call.
