The Maidment Photo Collection
Updated 12-Apr-2022

The following photographs were sent in to the site by Peter Maidment. They are from the collection of his father, Dennis Maidment. Dennis served aboard Hood during the Second World War. He was very fortunate to have been draughted from Hood just before she sailed to engage Bismarck.

Important Notice: These photos may not be republished or reposted elsewhere in any format without the express permission of Peter Maidment.

Above- These are portions of a certificate of injuries sustained by Dennis (not in action luckily!). The certificate is signed by Captain "Hooky" Walker who was later to preside at the Second Board of Enquiry into Hood's loss.

Winston Churchill boards Hood
Above and Below- Assorted shots of First Sea Lord Winston Churchill aboard Hood in mid March 1941. Some interesting observations: In the first two photos there are American naval personnel present- an officer in a white cap (most likely Ensign Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr, son of US President Roosevelt) and some enlisted men manning the motor launch in the distance on the right. We believe you can see Captain Kerr exchanging greetings with Mr. Churchill in the third photo.

In the last photo, one can see a battleship of the King George V class passing astern of Hood. This is very likely the brand new H.M.S. Prince of Wales.
