This document is a modern transcription of a small portion of Confidential Admiralty Fleet Order 2205 from the year 1940. It concerns potential deterioration of air filtration units used aboard a number of Royal Navy warships, to include Hood. 1940 C.A.F.O. 2205.—Filtration Units—Containers in—Inspection Scheme

A certain amount of deterioration of the type "G" containers used in filtration units occurs after long periods of service in H.M. ships, and in order to ensure that this deterioration does not proceed far enough to lessen seriously the ability of the containers to protect against war gases, the following action as been decided upon, and ships and dockyards should make all necessary arrangements accordingly:–

2. The following ships are to be provided with new filtration units at the first possible opportunity, and arrangements have been made for their manufacturer:–

"Leander,: "Achilles," "Orion" and "Arethusa."

3. The undetermentioned ships are to have the containers in their filtration units completely renewed at the first possible opportunity. Ten of the old containers from each unit should be forwarded to the Commandant, Chemical Defence Experimental Station, Porton, near Salisbury, Wilts., the remainder being destroyed and requesys for the new containers to be fitted should be forwarded to the above address. Full instructions for the removal and replacement of containers are given in C.A.F.O. 1561/40, and it is essential that these instructions should be rigidly adhered to:–

4. Ten containers are to be withdrawn from each unit in the following ships at the first possible opportunity and replaced with new containers, as indicated in paragraph 3. The ten old containers are to be forwarded without delay to the Experimental Station, Porton (full address as above), for examination and test:–

"Warspite" "Aurora" "Shropshire"
"Cornwall" "Nelson"  
"Dorsetshire" "Norfolk"  

5. Ten containers are to be withdrawn from each unit in the undermentioned ships as nearly as possible on the date indicated against each (unless, meanwhile, damage is sustained to units which necessitate recontainering), and forwarded to the Experimental Station, Porton, for examination and test, replacement in the units being made as indicated in paragraph 3. The dates shown are approximately three years from the dates of installation on board ; for ships marked *, however, the dates of installation are not known at the Admiralty, and these are to be reported approximately by the ships and dockyards concerned:–
