Biographical Information:

Stanley was born on 9th October 1919 in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire. He was the second son of Henry and Ann Watkinson, (nee Smith). His family emigrated to New Zealand in the mid 1920's. They settled in Hastings, Hawkes Bay.

After completing school, Stanley worked as a clerk. He remained in this position until he joined the Royal New Zealand Navy. He was part of a scheme to provide potential New Zealand naval officers six months intensive training aboard Royal Navy vessels before being appointed to New Zealand vessels. He departed New Zealand in September 1940 and was posted to Hood that December. She was his only ship.

Stanley was 21 years old at the time of his loss.
