Photos & Graphics of H.M.S. Hood
The Percival Photo Collection
Updated 12-Apr-2022
The following photographs were sent in to the site by Hood veteran Melville Percival. He served in Hood from roughly 1938 to 1939. Some of these photos actually pre-date his time in Hood, and were likely bought from the ship's bookstall or acquired from shipmates. Others date specifically from his time aboard. Nearly all are of Hood's service in the Mediterranean.
Important Notice: These photos may not be republished or reposted elsewhere in any format without the express permission of Melville Percival.
Above- Hood at Golfe Juan, April/May 1938
Above- Hood in Grand Harbour, Malta
Above- Hood (left) and Repulse (right) at Corfu, June/July 1938
Above- A picket boat (one of Hood's steam pinnaces)
Above and Below- This and the following two photos show the starboard side pom pom "Sammy".
In the background of the middle photo one can see the old liner R.M.S. Aquitania. Note the recently widened shelter/boat deck.
Above and Below- Spanish refugees aboard Hood in either August or November 1938
Above and Below- This and the following two photos show Repulse as she
leaves the fleet to pay off. Her present commission is ending and she
and her crew are bound for the UK for maintenance and reassignment.
Note the extremely long paying off pendant (as long as Repulse herself).
Above and Below- Swimming activities. This is believed to be a water polo game played against the French. Naturally, Hood completely crushed them 6-0!
