Biographical Information:

Arthur was born 22nd February 1918 in Middlesborough, Yorkshire. He was the eldest of five sons born to Arthur and Hetty Holroyd of Redcar, North Yorkshire.

He joined the Royal Navy at the age of fourteen in 1932. He was trained at H.M.S. Ganges in 1932 as a Boy Seaman. In his short naval career he was twice to serve aboard H.M.S. Hood,the first time as a Boy Seaman during the period 1934 to 1936 and the second time as Sail Makers Mate (Temporary) from 1939 to 1941. The interval between these two postings consisted of an assignment to the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert where he experienced the splendour of King George V's Silver Jubilee at the naval review at Spithead Portsmouth in 1935.

Arthur married Violet Warner of Bexleyheath, Kent in December 1940. There were no children of the marriage. Three of Arthur's brothers were to folow him into the Royal Navy and distinguished themselves in their chosen careers,one of them was involved as an aviator with H.M.S. Ark Royal in the sinking of the Bismarck. Arthur was serving as a Sailmaker's Mate (Temporary) and was 23 years old at the time of his loss.
