Michael was born on 19th August 1906 in Fulham, London to James and Eleanor Lewis. The family later lived in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. He was 34 years old at the time of his loss.

N.B. Michael's service record shows his second Christian name as "Edmund" rather than Edward.
