Biographical Information:

Sydney was born on 2nd March 1901 in Farnham, Surrey to Mr. and Mrs. James Stoyles. His middle name came from a place called "Standerton"- a place his father had served at during the Boer War. Sydney was the husband of Nellie Stoyles, of Portsmouth. Together they had 3 sons and a daughter. Prior to joining Hood, he had served in H.M.S. Suffolk. He was 40 years old at the time of his loss.
