Biographical Information:

Thomas was born at Eton, Berkshire on 1st February 1916, the younger son of Major Alfred Cartwright and his wife Helen Cartwright. He was named for his grandfather.

Thomas was educated at Brighton College during the early 1930s before joining the Royal Marines. He was promoted second-Lieutenant 1st September 1939, Lieutenant 20th February 1937 and Captain 27th December 1939. He was a recipient of the King George VI Coronation medal in 1937 and joined Hood on 14th August 1940. Thomas's home address was in Kensington, London at the time of his loss.
