Biographical Information:

Fred was born on 19 April 1922 in Neath, Glamorgan. He was the fifth of six children born to George and Gertrude Abbott of Canton, Cardiff. As a child, Fred attended Severn Road School in Cardiff. He played trumpet and horn and was a member of the Boys Brigade. He was also a chorister at St. Catherine's Anglican Church.

Though listed as a Marine, Fred actually served aboard Hood as a Royal Marine Band musician. Fred's action station at the time of Hood's sinking was the 15-inch Transmitting Station. He was 19 at the time of his loss.
