Hood Crewmen, 08 April 1941
This photo was donated by Don Bulman. It shows his father, Petty Officer Ken Bulman (in the great coat on the right) and several crewman aboard Hood near one of the twin 4" gun mounts (either "S3" or "P3"). Ken, and most likely most of the men shown here were later lost in the sinking of Hood. We do not know the other men's names (with the possible exception of one- the chap with the sailor's cap and cigarette may be Bill Rose or possibly Charlie Dobson). Hood Crewmen, January 1941
This photo was donated by Steven Sylvester. It shows his uncle, Ordinary Telegraphist James Sylvester (front row, right) and four shipmates on Hood's forecastle in January 1941. The photo was likely taken early in the month when the ship was at Scapa Flow. Unfortunately, we do not know the names of the other four men pictured here. Its quite possible that some, perhaps all were later lost in the sinking of Hood. If you recognise anyone here, please contact us.

Gunners Aboard Hood, 1940
This photo shows personnel for one of Hood's 4" dual purpose guns. They appear to be assembled on the port side of the ship abreast the funnels. The only person we are currently able to identify is Lawrence Ede (front row, centre). Lawrence was fortunate to leave Hood shortly before her loss. Also pictured in this photo is Eric Burn. The photo was donated by his son Keith Ede and Commodore Dick Twitchen CBE. If you can positively identify anyone else here, please let us know.

Royal Marine Band Aboard Hood, 1940 or 1941
This photo shows members of the Royal Marine Band assembled aboard Hood. They are assembled just behind the second funnel roughly where the main complement of boats were normally held. In the background are the amidships searchlight platform and the structure housing the disinfector house and the motor boat workshop. The workshop is the tallest portion with the three canvas curtained windows (those are not vents!). If you can positively identify anyone else here, please let us know.

Hood Crewmen, 1940 or 1941
These photos were donated by Colin Bonner. They are from the collection of his uncle, Colin Bonner (lost in the sinking of Hood). The photo to the left shows Colin (holding ammunition) and the crew of one of the 4" gun crews abreast the rear superstructure of Hood. At this point in time, we are only able to identify three other men- Leading Seaman John Walton (bearded man near lower centre), William Dunwell (far right/wearing the scarf) and John Henry Wilson (the man in the very centre, directly in front of John Walton. The photo to the right is of an unknown man. If you can identify anyone else here, please let us know.

Sailors on the Shelter Deck, 1940/1941
This photo was donated by Mrs Doreen Miller. It shows Stoker Jack Silk (left) and two other men on Hood's Shelter Deck. They are sitting on a boat crutch for one of the new 35ft fast motor boats.

Behind them one can see on of the 0.5" machine gun emplacements as well as other pieces of machinery. We do not know the name of the lad seated in the centre, but believe the lad to the right to be either Robin McCormick or Bill Rose). If you recognise the seated chap or can conclusively identify the chap to the right, please let us know.

Lost Ship's Boys, 1940/1941
This photo was donated by Nigel Flitter and Paul Cheney. It shows over 30 lads from Hood's crew. They are standing in front of a building named for the battle of the Glorious 1st of June. We have confirmed that at least 28 of the men shown here died in the sinking of Hood less than a year later. We DO have the listing of names that goes with the photo, but it would appear that the list is not in any particular order. With the exception of Les Bispham, we don't know which man is which. If you recognise anyone here, please let us know.

Hood Ratings, 1940
This photo was donated by Mary McKeown. It shows Navy ratings/enlisted men sitting atop the forward turrets and superstructure of Hood. Based on the configuration of the ship, the photo was taken sometime during 1940. Although we don't know for certain, this could be a behind the scenes photo of the men taking their places for a currently unknown mass crew photo. They could also be assembling for an address or a ship side sporting event.

Hood Crew, 1940
This photo is from the H.M.S. Hood Association Archives. It shows Captain Glennie and a large number of the crew. This is believed to be the last full crew photo ever taken of the ship and her men. Though many of the men pictured here were later transferred, it should still be noted that most of the men shown here were probably lost in the sinking of the ship. If you can help identify any of the men (or have a clearer copy you can send us), please let us know.

4" Gun Crews Circa 1940/1941
These photos show men of Hood's twin 4" gun crews posing aboard the ship sometime in 1940 or 1941. They appear to be clustered around mounting "S3" (located next to the after superstructure on the starboard side of the ship). These photos were donated by Tony Whitewood. His brother, Able Seaman Cyril Whitewood manned one of these guns. Cyril was lost in the sinking of Hood. Also in this photo (to the left of Cyril) is Arthur Holroyd (back row, left). Stoker Philip Ball may also be at the far right in the left-hand photo. If anyone can help identify any of the other men, please let us know.

Hood Crew, 1939
This photo was donated by Chris Lewis. It was given to him by Mrs. Margaret Dawson, whose uncle served on Hood. Most of the crew (800+) are shown posing on the bow of the ship at Malta on 01 January 1939. If you can help identify any of the men, please let us know.

Hood Crewmen, 1939
This photo was donated by Lynda Elliott. It came from the collection of Stoker Stanley Dinsdale who was lost in the sinking of Hood. Lewis. It shows Stan and some shipmates posing on Hood's focsle. The photo dates from the mid-late 1930s when Hood was serving in the Mediterranean Fleet. If you can positively identify any of the men in the photo, please let us know.

Hood Crewmen, Late 1930s/Early World War 2
This photo was donated by Michael Morrow. It shows his late grandfather, gunner John (Jackie) McGregor and mates aboard Hood. Jackie is at the bottom left. Jackie was fortunate to be drafted from Hood just a few months before she was lost. Other men man identified here are Leading Seaman John Johnson Ather (back row right) and George William Pack (bottom right). If anyone can help identify any of the men, please let us know.

Crewmen at H.M.S. Royal Arthur, 1940s
This photo was sent to us by Joan Major. It was formerly in a collection of photos owned by Edward Strange who was lost in the sinking of Hood. We believe this was taken in 1940 (based on other classes we know of). If you know the identity of any of the sailors pictured here, please let us know.

Crew Aboard Hood, 1938
This photo was sent to us by Mike Grimes. It was taken on Hood's boat deck sometime in 1938. It shows a group of sailors holding a newspaper. Among these men is Mike's father, Richard Arthur Grimes (middle row, third from the left). We do not know the names of any of the other men, but if you do, please contact us and let us know.

Stokers Loafing Crew At Sea Near Bilbao, April 1937
This photo was taken on Hood's focsle abreast the bridge in April 1937. It shows a group of Stokers (known as the "Stokers Loafing Crew") lounging in the Mediterranean sun. We do not know the names of any of the men save one- the man with the penciled in asterisk over his head was named "Leslie". This photo was provided to us by Laura O'Neill (it was in the possession of her grandmother).

The Hood's Harmony Boys Band, Mid-Late 1930s
This photo was taken just behind the bridge on the port side sometime during Hood's service with the Mediterranean Fleet (1936-1939). It shows the Harmony Boys band. This photo is a scan taken from a postcard in the possession of Donald McCleary Jr.

Rifle Team, Circa 1937/1938
This photo was taken on Hood's quarterdeck in 1937 or 1938. It shows her championship shooting team. This is courtesy of the family of crewman James Roland Higginson (second row, far right) and is also part of the Higginson Photo Collection. Another sailor in this photo is William Dinnell (holding a rifle, front row, far right).

Marine Sports Team Aboard Ship, 1936

This photo was donated by H.A. Huntley. His father, Henry Huntley, served aboard Hood from the late 1930s until the very end. He was lost in the sinking of Hood. If you can identify any of the men in this photo, please let us know.

Stokers in Nice, France During the Late 1930s
This photo was sent to us by Mrs D.M. Marshment. Her brother, Thomas Jennings, served in Hood for 3 years as a Stoker 1st Class. He is shown here in the front row, second from the left. Sadly, Thomas was lost serving aboard H.M. Submarine Tetrarch, in November 1941. Six other Stokers believed to be present are Frederick Dyer or Robert 'Mickey' Glenn (back row second from the right ), William Townley (or Victor Robert Francis) (back row, third from the right), Thomas Graham (back row, second from the left) Danny McCaughey (front row second from the right) and Harry Holderness (front row first on left).

Hood Crew, Late 1930s
These photos were donated by Glen Hughes. His Grandfather's brother, Len Pay, served aboard Hood from the late 1930s onward. These photos show Len and some of his mates. Len was later lost in the sinking of Hood.

We know the identity of only two other men- Danny Maher is in the top row, far left in the upper photo and top row, far right in the lower photo. Also present is Sydney Charles Townsend is at the far left in the centre row of the upper photo. If anyone can help identify any of the other men, please let us know. Hood Athletes, 1935
This photo was donated by Valerie Juniper.It shows her father, Thomas Hardman ( 2nd from the right) and rowing team mates. This was probably taken after the 1935 Home Fleet Regatta (which Hood won). Seated next to Thomas is Commander Rory O'Conor (holding telescope). They are sitting on the aft end of the Shelter Deck, to starboard of the after superstructure. Stokers Racing Whaler Crew, Mid- 1930s
This photo was donated by the family of Hood crewman Arthur Brett. Arthur served in Hood between 1933 and 1936 and is shown here in the back row, second from the left. Also pictured here is engineering officer LtCdr A.F.F. Menzies, front row, centre. This is possibly from right after the 1935 Fleet Regatta. The men are posing on the starboard side of the after superstructure. If you can identify any of the other men, please let us know.

Hood Engineering Crewmen, Mid 1930s
This photo was donated by Ken Russell. It shows his father, Chief Engine Room Artificer Charles Russell (back row, far right) and fellow crewmen aboard Hood near the main mast and after superstructure. Charles served on Hood until shortly before her ill-fated sortie to find Bismarck. Another individual shown here is Chief Petty Officer ET Wearn (centre row, extreme right). Admiral's Staff, 1924 (Empire Cruise)
This photo was provided by H.M.S. Hood Association Lord Henry Hood. It is a newspaper clipping showing the staff of Sir Frederick Field circa 1924. These men were aboard the ship during the Empire Cruise of 1923/1924.

Memorial Service, Spring 1924 (Empire Cruise)
This photo is from the H.M.S. Hood Association Archives. It shows a solemn gathering on Hood's quarterdeck. The crew was assembled for a service of remembrance for Signal Boatswain Albert Punshon, who died whilst the ship was in Australia during the Empire Cruise of 1923/1924.

Hood Crew, Late 1924 (Empire Cruise)
This photo was donated by Mrs A Bishop of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was taken by her father Harris H Reid in Newfoundland (probably Topsail Bay) on 15 October 1924. This was the last stop of the famous Empire Cruise. If anyone can help identify any of the men, please let us know.

H.M.S. Hood's Athletic Party, Rio De Janeiro, September 3rd, 1922
This photo was sent to us by Colin Rowe. It shows the sailors and marines from Hood who represented Britain during a "mini Olympics" held to commemorate Brazilian Independence from 03-14 September. They are sitting to port near the end of Hood's Shelter Deck (Boat Deck). Sitting with them ( front row, immediately to the right of the trophy) is RADM Walter Cowan.
